Emotions and physical changes

Emotions and physiological changes, which one   appears first?

While walking in the mountains, suddenly a snake appears in the road, your heart rate increases, you breathe heavier, and you run away. When you stop, you feel chills and a cold sweat.

Usually people fear seeing snakes, which produces physiological changes, such as a rise in heart rate, shortness of breath, perspiration, running away, etc.

William JamesPsychologist Dr. William James proposed an opposite theory. In response to seeing a snake, physiological changes of increased heart rate, shortness of breath, and sweating accrue first followed by the feeling of fear and running action. Accordingly, the physiological changes make people feel afraid. His theory was popular in the early twentieth century, although other psychologists have opposed it. However, James's theory is still mentioned in psychological textbooks, and some scientists are using this theory to explore emotions and find methods to improve emotions.

Why remove the physiological changes?

James’ theory suggests that if the physiological changes are removed, the emotions will go with them. In real life, if a person becomes agitated, other people let him/her sit down and drink some water in order to decrease his/her heart rate and slow down his/her breathing. Negative emotions that occur for no apparent reason and last persistently disturb people's lives. Therefore, it is worth trying to remove these physiological changes. In suchcase, acupuncture can be used as a treatment method.

What types of physiological changes   can be removed by acupuncture?

Acupuncture treatment can be performed to remove these symptoms when anxiety or depression are accompanied by the following physiological changes.

1. Heart palpitations

2. Headaches, dizziness

3. Nausea, Vomiting,

    Stomach ache
